Club History

The Ferry Rangers AFC club was established in 1995 in response to a need for sport and social club activity within the local community. The name of the club originated from an earlier team which had played in the Desmond Cup competition and about 20 years previous. The club offers soccer participation and spectatorship to an immediate catchments population within 10 mile radius spanning across a wide age grouping amongst male and females.
 
Land was made available to the club in 1995 by a local Hotel owner on a yearly rental basis. The club grew from strength to strength due to the club management and members. It was agreed that the club would purchase its own pitch for the benefit of the club’s future and did so at Doonard, 0.5 miles from Tarbert on the Ballylongford road. Planning permission was to Ferry Rangers on January 27th 2006.  Huge effort was put into fund raising to accomplish this great deed. Work commenced on the playing field June 26th 2006.Ferry Rangers started playing in their new ground August 2008 and the first game was against Asdee Rovers in which Ferry won 2-0.
 
Although now the club is based in County Kerry it is a member of the Desmond League in West Limerick. However, it is the belief of the club that access to an improved pitch would attract increased co-operation with its fellow clubs in the Kerry region. The club provides the unique facility to underage players in its own area but also to underage players in Asdee, Ballylongford and Moyvane catchment areas. These underage players would have no access to the game without Ferry Rangers AFC. The club welcomes their participation.  
 
The club has grown from starting with a junior team to now having teams at U10, U12, U14, U16, Youths and Junior. It is of great credit to management of these players for who have received a Desmond player of the year award and also having a player selected for Irish U15 trials in 2004.
 
The phased development of the pitch at Doonard is to continue with viewers stand, meeting room facilities, changing rooms, toilets, flood lighting and car park. This is essential for the long-term objectives for the club. Club management also firmly believes that the improved facility will add value to the social aspect of the club to the local community and the surrounding areas.
