Ferry Rangers 2 - Pallaskenry 1

05 Apr 2014

Youths Complete Double

Ferry added the Youths Div 3 League Cup trophy to the league title won a few weeks ago when they recorded a 2-1 victory over Pallaskenry in Clounreask on Saturday evening.

Pallas almost opened the scoring in the 5th minute when Ger Garvey progressed down the left flank and crossed low to Evan Kelly, whose powerful shot rattled the woodwork.

Ferry didn't panic though and with some neat work down the middle they created their first chance when Denis Sheehan was set one on one. He did well to chip the keeper but the ball bounced wide.

Pallas struck back straight away when Richard Downes hit a thunderous volley from a Garvey cross but credit to the Ferry keeper Jamie Diggins who produced a top class save to deny Downes.

Ferry got the break through just before halftime. Midfielder Paul O'Connor collected the ball on the halfway line, ran with the ball and then fired a super shot into the top right-hand corner from 30 yards.

Pallas started the second half strongly and got a deserved equaliser five minutes after the restart. Garvey whipped in a free and the speed of the ball deceieved Diggins and bounced under his body. The goal gave the hoops the boost they needed and they were unlucky not to go in front when Kelly had a goal disallowed for off-side.

In the 55th minute Ferry's striker Finbarr Carrig put in a good cross which Pallas failed to clear and his partner up front Denis Sheehan shot to the roof of the net.

The Hoops desparately sought an equaliser, Diggins in the Ferry goals produced a world class save in the 65th minute to deny Kelly who was through on goal. Pallas piled on the pressure but the Ferry defence stood strong to claim the win.

Ferry centre-half Brian Heaphy was chosen as Man of the Match, while Ferry also had good performaces from Paul O'Connor, especially in the first half, Shea McDonnell and the Carrig brothers.
